Positioning is the skill and practice of identifying your target audience and placing yourself (your marketing message about your products) infront of your target audience.

The key to getting your message infront of your target audience is to first define who your audience is and then to determine where your target audience is going or looking to find solutions to their problems.

When you're using the Internet as a marketing tool the way to target your audience is through keyword research.

What is Keyword Research?

First let's define what keywords are. 

Keywords are the words and phrases that people type into seach engines, like Google and Yahoo, when they're trying to find some kind of information.

For example, if someone who wants to lose weight goes to Google and types into the search bar "weight loss tips" they will be taken to a web page with a list of links to other web pages about...weight loss tips.  That result page is called a "search engine results page", or SERP, for short.  The words that were typed into the search engine, "weight loss tips", are the keywords that brought up the SERP.

As a web user, keywords and keyword research isn't all that important.  You type them into the search bar and off you go to get the information you're looking for. 

As a marketer, however, keywords and keyword research could not be more critically important to your online success.

As a marketer you will be using keywords derived from your keyword research to drive traffic to your website in the following ways:

  1. pay per click advertising
  2. search engine indexing
